Cutting edge technology for waste-to-energy plants

Diapers account for a significant 8% of all residual waste and are often incinerated, resulting in CO2 emissions and loss of resources. To remedy this, Repaid has developed a system that allows waste-to-energy plants and waste processors to handle diaper waste in an environmentally friendly and profitable manner.

Advantages of Repaid

Patented technology that is already operational at an industrial scale.

Based on a robust thermal process without the use of chemicals.

Significant CO2 savings and the recovery of 95% of the materials.

Repaid technology works in conjunction with new as well as existing facilities.

About Repaid

Frequently
asked
questions

Is Repaid's technology scalable for large-scale use?

Yes, Repaid's recycling process is patented and ready for industrial-scale use. In collaboration with ARN in Weurt, the first diaper recycling facility has already been constructed. This facility can process 15,000 tons of diaper waste annually.

What does that mean in terms of savings?

For every ton of diapers recycled using Repaid technology, a CO2 saving of 964 kg is achieved. Additionally, the plastics can be reused in high-quality applications such as the automotive industry. The remaining organic material is converted into biogas and a soil improver after treatment in a digester.

What about pathogens and medication?

Repaid uses steam instead of chemicals to sanitize the diaper mass. The high temperatures efficiently break down both microorganisms and medication. This ensures that the recovered materials can be safely reused. Meanwhile, the remaining wastewater is also rid of any substance that could pose a threat to public health.

Can the super absorbent polymers also be isolated?

Yes, the super absorbent polymers (SAPs) can be isolated using the Repaid recycling process. This material can be used, for example, as a binder for flooring, semi-dry concrete, and paving stones.

We are interested in a diaper recycling installation from Repaid, how does that work?

Repaid's technology is available under license for waste processors interested in diaper recycling. Repaid works closely with you at every step, from the initial feasibility study to the design and construction of the facility. This collaboration ensures that each project is specifically tailored to the needs of your facility and organization.

Do you need to own a waste-to-energy plant to qualify for a Repaid installation?

While waste-to-energy plants are ideal for integrating a Repaid diaper recycling installation due to ready availability of steam, other waste processors can also benefit from a Repaid installation by adding a steam generator or by using steam from nearby industry or (waste) energy plants.

How future-proof is the Repaid process for diaper recycling?

Repaid's diaper recycling installations can process all types of diapers and incontinence materials, including biodegradable and bio-based variants. This versatility ensures that Repaid will never be a limiting factor for innovations in the diaper industry (e.g. use of bio-based materials). Moreover, Repaid installations can be fitted with modifications or new technology. This ensures that Repaid installations will continue to efficiently process diaper waste, regardless of its composition, in the future.
